Is Facebook a Social Media Platform or a Translator?

From a social media platform that helps to share and connect one to another, Facebook is now making a huge leap and effort by offering automatic machine translation function on comments made in all other languages into English.

The good news is that this feature is capable of translating various languages such as Hebrew, French, Spanish, Japanese, Thai, and Chinese, you name it. Facebook has successfully rolled out this feature in the late of 2011; however, it has only come to attention by many earlier this year.

Beyond a shadow of doubt, it will definitely be a boon to every user. Hassle of manually translating the comments via Google Translate can now be prevented. An addition of this simple button has made language difference a learning opportunity rather than a language barrier.

For Facebook users who are unaware and have not already tried out the feature, it is powered by Microsoft Bing, another type of machine translator close to the likes of Google Translate. However, machine translation is not flawless. We should not overlook the fact that machine translators only interpret the gist of the content with minimal accuracy.

Machine translators have worked wonder in assisting us to find out the gist of content, however, they should be used with discretion as the translated content may not be professionally sound, most of the time, and hence, definitely should NOT be used for professional and important documents.

On The Fly Interpretation

Last week we looked at Word Lens, an application that allows you to visually translate text on the go, today we are going to review another useful application called Jibbigo , this time it has the ability to interpret on the go.

As shown in the following video, you would just need to speak into your iPhone and it would automatically capture and interpret whatever you have spoken into the target language, in this case from English to Chinese.

As compared to Word Lens, this application is much pricier, it ranges from USD$24.99 to USD$27.99 per language pairing and is currently available in Spanish-English, Japanese-English, Chinese-English, Iraqi Arabic-English, Korean-English, French-English. German-English, and Philipino-English.

On The Fly Translation

Going overseas to a foreign country and you are not very familiar with the language there? why not try out this iPhone app called word lens.

As demonstrated in the video below, by simply pointing your iPhone at the foreign words, the app would be able to instantaneously translate them into English , and best of all you would not require internet access to utilize this app.

The application is available for free at the apple app store, but you would need to do an in app purchase of US$4.99 for each of the language pairs, currently there are only 2 language pairs available; the “English to Spanish” and the “Spanish to English” translations.

If your destination is Spain or any other Spanish speaking countries, this is one app you should try out.
